Ph.D in Engineering - by Research Only

The PhD degree is conferred in recognition of marked ability and scholarship in some relatively broad field of knowledge. The student must perform an independent investigation in the form of a thesis.

Programme Description
Upon admission to and enrolment in the Kulliyyah of Engineering, all PhD students are eligible and given the option to sit for the Comprehensive Examination.

In the event that either (1) a PhD student sits and fails the Comprehensive Examination or (2) a PhD student chooses to defer his Comprehensive Examination and take some postgraduate courses, the Kulliyyah of Engineering, after recommendation from the relevant department, will assign three postgraduate engineering courses to be taken by the student.

With a minimum grade of B (CGPA of 3.0 or above), he/she will be allowed to sit for the Comprehensive Examination. The student can repeat the Comprehensive Examination only once. After passing the Comprehensive Examination, a PhD student registers for the thesis and starts in consultation with his/her supervisor, preparing his/her thesis.

All PhD students are required to submit a thesis that contains the findings of their research project which carries 0 credit hours. Students will select a research topic via consultation with their supervisors who will guide the students in the preparation and the progress of both research work and thesis writing.

The students will defend their thesis in front of a Thesis Examination Committee in a public seminar. All Master’s and PhD theses should be submitted according to the Thesis Format specified by the Graduate Studies Administration.

Other graduation requirements for the PhD programmes are (i) taking a Seminar Course for two semesters, and (ii) taking the course RKGS 6000 Values, Technology and Society. If it is deemed necessary to reinforce and/or supplement the engineering background of a PhD student, he/she could be asked by his/her supervisor to attend certain undergraduate or postgraduate courses as special-requirement courses and/or audit courses.
