FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH GRANT SCHEME FOR RESEARCH ACCULTURATION OF EARLY CAREER RESEARCHERS – FRGS-RACER

PHASE 1/2019

MINISTRY OF EDUCATION MALAYSIA

Dear Respected IIUM Researchers.,

 

This is to inform that the Ministry of Education Malaysia had announced the opening of the FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH GRANT SCHEME FOR RESEARCH ACCULTURATION OF EARLY CAREER RESEARCHERS – FRGS-RACER 1/2019 from 25 MARCH 2019 – 15  MAY 2019.
 

The Fundamental Research Grant Scheme for Research Acculturation of Early Career Researchers (FRGS-RACER) which is a fund aimed at inculcating research among new researchers at the Public Universities which are non- Research Universities (RUs).

In relation to the above, we wish to encourage interested academic staff to make the necessary preparations accordingly:

 • Science and Technology Field - RM80,000.00.

 

• Social Science and Humanitarian Affairs -RM50,000.00.

Not exceeding TWO (2) years


PHILOSOPHY

In its aspiration to achieve a developed nation, Malaysia needs to nourish the culture of inquiry. Hence, this research grant scheme is created to generate knowledge that can contribute to the improvement of intellectual levels, the creation of new technologies and dynamic cultural enrichment in line with this aspiration.

 

OBJECTIVES

The fund serves as a preparation to develop research achievements amongst new researchers in order for them to be more competitive nationally and internationally. This FRGS-RACER is implemented in accordance with the FRGS guidelines in terms of fundamental research definitions, research domains, application methods, evaluation criteria, monitoring and research findings.

 

NATIONAL SECTOR

Each application must meet the National Priority Areas (NPAs) as follows:

 

i. Food Security

ii. Energy Security

iii. Cyber Security

iv. Water Security

v. Biodiversity

vi. Healthcare and Medicine

vii. Environment and Climate Change

viii. Transportation and Mobility

 

RESEARCH CLUSTER

Each application should be based on the following cluster of research:

i. Basic Infrastructure

ii. Climate Change and Environment

iii. Health

iv. Education and Society

v. National Security

vi. Social and Economic Wellbeing

vii. Frontier Technologies and Advanced Manufacturing

 

* Note: The Priority Sector includes IR4.0 (Cyber Security, Big Data, and Artificial Intelligence) which refers to National Policy on Industry 4.0.

 

RESEARCH DOMAIN

FRGS-RACER grant funding covers the basic domain that can support the country's strategic agenda. Identified domains are: -

A. Pure and Applied Science

B. Technology and Engineering

C. Clinical and Health Sciences

D. Social Sciences

E. Arts and Applied Arts

F. Natural and Cultural Heritage

G. Information and Communication Technology

 

RESEARCH PERIOD

The research period shall not exceed two (2) years.

 

MAXIMUM AMOUNT (RM)

The amount of application applied shall not exceed the prescribed ceiling of:

• Science and Technology Field - Ceiling of each project is not more than RM80,000.00.

• Social Science and Humanitarian Affairs - Ceiling of each project is not more than RM50,000.00.
