About Department of Library & Information Science

Department of Library & Information Science Establishment

The Department of Library & Information Science was established in 1992 offering the Master in Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree to both full time and part time students. In the initial period, the programme was meant to upgrade the competency of existing librarians, while at the same time producing a new breed of competent informational professionals imbued with Islamic values to meet the diverse needs and demands of the job market. The doctoral programme (PhD) in Library and Information Science was added later.

The Department was initially under Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Science (KIRKHS). On November 1st, 2002, the Ministry has approved the establishment of the Kulliyyah of Information and Communication Technology, in which DLIS is one of its two initial departments. Currently, there are three departments under KICT, i.e., Department of Library and Information Science (LIS), Department of Information System (IS) and Department of Computer Science (CS).

2022 marks the 30 years of the establishment of the Department of Library Information Science (DLIS). In its 30 years of establishment, DLIS has grown into one of the finest institutions in producing an expert in the Library and Information Science field.

The Connexion@DLIS presents a chance to recognize the KICT family and to galvanize DLIS’s mission and vision. Library Information Science Students Assembly (LISSA) with the DLIS will work hand in hand in organizing this celebration. A lot of activities will be organized during the celebration such as seminars, sharing sessions by successful alumni from different fields (academician and librarian), poster competitions, and social media posting competitions. There will also be a montage of the history or journey of DLIS from its establishment until the present. The proposed event will be conducted in a hybrid (online and face to face). For this celebration, the organizer plans to invite all DLIS alumni, Kulliyah members, DLIS previous and current lecturers to participate in this memorable event and to celebrate them as part of the DLIS family.
