IIUM Workshop on Islamisation & Integration of Knowledge, I-WIN 1 (2014)


Aim: To incorporate ethical values and maqasid al-shari’ah into science based subjects and practices.

Organizer: Centris Kuantan, Office of the Campus Director, and Science based faculties of IIUM Kuantan.

Theme: Integration of Sciences and Islamic Revealed Knowledge: Current issues and practices.

Date: 25th March 2014.

OFFICIATING

In the late morning session, I-WIN was officiated by the Honorable Rector of IIUM, Prof Dr Zaleha Bt Kamaruddin. In her officiating note, the rectors give an overview about the importance and the position of integration of knowledge in IIUM curriculum of education. Right after her officiation, deputy rector Prof Dato’ Dr Md Tahir Md Azhar, give a complementary speech on how to infuse Islamic values into science based subjects, especially in health care practices.


MORNING SESSION AND SPEAKERS

The first session of the workshop begin at 8.30, with three speakers. The speakers were:

  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Badri Najib, Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences. He addressed certain issues related to integration of knowledge process and relevant practices as well as rationale and steps of achieving desirable knowledge from the Islamic perspective.
  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Kasim Al-Bazirgan, Kulliyyah of Dentistry highlighted moral practices of Muslim doctor, and presented Islamic ethical values that expected a Muslim doctor to observe in his or her profession.
  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Abdurezak Abdulahi Hashi, Kullliyyah of Sciences addressed the relationship between beliefs and knowledge production, with particularly emphasizes on different beliefs influence knowledge of science. He illustrated belief systems and highlighted differences between towhidic paradigm and other belief system.


AFTERNOON SESSION AND PANELISTS

The afternoon session was a forum on how to infuse Islamic input to respective science programmes. The forum took place in the afternoon of the same day of the workshop. It started 2.30pm and ended 4.30pm, with three panelist and moderator. The panelists were Deputy Rector, Research and Innovation, Prof Dr Mohamed Ridza Wahiddin, Director of Centre for Islamization, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hazizan Mohd Noon, Deputy Dean, student affairs, Kulliyyah of Medicine, Prof Dr Arif bin Osman , while the moderator was Asst Prof Dr Marwan, Kulliyyah of Pharmacy. The forum highlighted various issues related to Islamization and Integration of Human Knowledge, ranging from how to improve the methods of teaching, personal enhancement and upgrading the inputs of given subjects. Experiences of various faculties and departments are shared. Certain problems encountered by different faculties were highlighted. Certain solution of solve given problems of Islamization and integration of knowledge addressed.

Morning session of I-WIN 2, begin at 8.30am. In this session, the academic discussion has focused on various aspects and applications of the Islamic Principle of Harm Reduction in Biomedical Practices: Current Issues and Prospects. The speakers were:

It started 2.30pm and ended 4.30pm, with three panelists and moderator; it has addressed Issues and challenges of harm reduction in biomedical practices, including harm reduction in the area of medication and drug prescription. The panelists were Assoc. Prof. Dr Mohamad Tariqur Rahman from Kulliyyah of Sciences, Prof. Dr Ibrahim M. Zain, Kulliyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences, Prof. Dato.   • Asst. Prof. Dr. Lokman Md Isa, Kulliyyah of Nursing addressed Genetically Modified Organism and relation to stemcell research.
  • Asst. Prof. Dr Abdurezak Abdulahi Hashi, Kulliyyah of Sciences addressed Genetically Modified Organism and Maqasid al-shariah.
  • Assist. Prof. Dr. Zarina Zainuddin addressed Genetically Modified Organism and relation to Food.


AFTERNOON SESSION AND PANELISTS

MORNING SESSION AND SPEAKERS

The first session of the workshop begin at 9.15 a.m. with five speakers, one English-arabic translator and one MC. The speakers were:

  • Assoc. Prof Dr. Roszaman Ramli, Head of IIUM fertility centre, addressed certain issues related to fertility interm of practices , cases , success stories as well as the challenges to have multiple or triple pregnancy.
  • Dr. Mohamed Ebrahim Elsherbibi Ahmed Saqr from Kolej University Islam Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah (KUIPSAS) highlighted fertilisation from shari’ah perspective and gave some dua from al-quran al-kareem and practices for those who have still do not have children.
  • Sr. Azantee Yazmie Abd Wahab from Kulliyyah of Medicine, addressed nature and steps in nurturing the embryo for fertilization and Sr. Khadijah Muhd Bustaman from Kulliyyah of Medicine convey her speech entitled fertility and how it related to psychological challenges.
  • Dr. Abdurezak Abdulahi Hashi from Kulliyyah of Science, addressed the opinion of the fuqaha fertilisation and artificial insemination and highlighted differences between them.


AFTERNOON SESSION AND PANELISTS

The afternoon forum was on Understanding Ethical Issues of Fertility from Islamic Perspective. The forum took place in the afternoon of the same of the workshop. It started at 2.15 p.m. and ended 4.45 p.m. with three panelists and moderator.The panelist were.   • Abdul Syukor bin Abd. Razak, Head of Environment Department CERRM Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), addressed certain issues related to environment in term of policies & strategies of environmental protection.
  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohd Shukri Mohd Aris from Kulliyyah of Science, highlighted environmental issues in Malaysia as a rich biodiversity and the oldest rainforests in the world, as well as Kuantan, and the process of air pollutions.
  • Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Adam Ahmed Shogar, from Kulliyyah of Science, addressed environmental issues from Islamic perspectives
  • Prof. Hunud Abia Kadauf convey his speech entitled comparative perspective between environmental law and regulations through VC from Gombak.


AFTERNOON SESSION AND PANELISTS

Forum on Environmental Policies, Regulations, Issues and Ethics.The forum took place in the afternoon of the same day of the workshop. It started at 2.15 p.m. and ended 4.30 p.m. with three panelists and moderator. The panelists were Head of CERRM UMP, Abdul Syukor bin Abd. Razak, lecturers from Kulliyyah of Science Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohd Shukri Mohd Aris, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Adam Ahmed Shogar and Prof. Dr. Hunud Abia Kadaouf while the moderator was Dr. Marwan Saad Azzubaidi from Kulliyyah of Pharmacy, IIUM Kuantan. The forum highlighted various issues related to Islamisation and integration of human knowledge, ranging from the right practices to save the environment to maintain the biodiversity and  the contribution of human towards nature as well as environmental policies and regulations. Experiences of various academicians are shared. Certain problems encountered by different faculties and institutions were highlighted. A photography session was held at 4.45 p.m. with all I-WIN 5 participants and the organizing committees as well as speakers.

The first session of the workshop begin at 8.30 a.m. with three speakers and one MC. The speakers were:

  • Asst. Prof Dr. Mohd Arifin bin Kaderi from Kulliyyah of Allied Health Science, IIUM Kuantan Campus addressed Vaccination: Componets and Effects.
  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdurezak Abdullahi Hashi from Kulliyyah of Science, IIUM Kuantan Campus addressed Preventive Medicine and Vaccination in the view of Muslim Jurists (Fuqaha).
  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Abdul Hadi bin Said from Kulliyyah of Medicine addressed Vaccination: Components, Practices and cases Fiqh Issues.


AFTERNOON SESSION AND PANELISTS

Forum “Vaccination: Components, Practices and Fiqh Issues”.The forum took place in the morning of the same day of the workshop. It started at 11.30 a.m. and ended 1.30 p.m. with three panellists and moderator. The panellists Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohd Arifin bin Kaderi from Kulliyyah of Allied Health Science, IIUM Kuantan Campus, and Assoc. Prof Dr. Abdurezak Abdullahi Hashi from Kulliyyah of Science and Asst. Prof. Dr. Abdul Hadi bin Said. The Moderator, Dr. Muhamad Ashraf Rostam from Kulliyyah of Allied Health Sciences, IIUM Kuantan Campus.   • Dr. Izwan Mohd Yusof, JAKIM addressed Gender dan LGBT dari Kacamata Islam.
  • Prof. Dr. Najibah, AIKOL addressed LGBT dan Implikasi Undang-Undang. 
  • Prof. Dato’ Dr. Ariff bin Osman addressed Peranan Badan Bukan Kerajaan (NGO) dalam menyantuni golongan LGBT Kulliyyah of Medicine.

Prof. Dr. Samsul Draman Kulliyyah of Medicine, Dr Izwan Mohd Yosuf, JAKIM, Bro Mohd Al Khusyairi, HIJRAH REPBLIQUE and Haji Bakri, Persatuan Insaf Pahang (PIP). OFFICIATING

The workshop's welcoming speech was given by the Campus Director Prof. Dr. Kamaruzzaman bin Yunus and for officiated by Deputy Minister of Works, Yb. Tuan Haji Mohd Anuar bin Mohd Tahir. He was accompanied by IIUM Representative, Asst. Prof. Dr. Ahmad Nabil Md. Rosli, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nora bt Mat Zin, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Latiff Abdul Razak, Dr Zul Azlin Razali and Sis Nur Syamimie A. Rahman.

  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Ahmad Nabil Md Rosli, Kulliyyah of Medicine addressed The Approaches to Mental Illness From the History of lslamic Civilisation (Pendekatan Masalah Kesihatan Mental dalam Sejarah Tamadun Islam).
  • Assoc. Prof Dr. Nora bt Mat Zin, Kulliyyah of Medicine addressed  Scientific Basis of Mental IIlness & Its Treatment (Asas Saintifik Masalah Kesihatan Mental dan Rawatannya).
  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Latiff bin Abdul Razak, Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed and Knowlegde addressed Therapeutic Values of al- Quran and Ahadith for Mental Illness (Nilai Terapeutik al-Qur’an dan Ahadith bagi Masalah Kesihatan Mental.

Forum Isu Kesihatan Mental: Integrasi Islam dan Psikiatri. The forum took place in the morning of the same day of the workshop. It started at 2.30 until 4.30 pm with 3 panellist and moderator.
