In 2002, a proposal was submitted to the Ministry of Education to establish SLEU because of concerns regarding student academic performance.
A steering committee was established as a task force to create program for enhancing the academic performance of the students. The first iflah Motivation Camp was conducted in December 2002.
In February 2004, the steering committee was dissolved and SLEU was formally established under the purview of the Deputy Rector (Academic & Research). SLEU main objective to cater for the needs of students who were facing motivational problems and learning difficulties.
With the appointment of Deputy Head of SLEU Kuantan in June 2008, the services had been extended to IIUM students in Kuantan which currently operating at Kulliyyah of Allied Health Sciences.
In August 2016, the University Management Board in its Meeting No. 12/ 2016 had approved on the Re-naming of SLEU to Student Smart Learning and Research Training Unit (SMART). The re-naming was approved on the basis that the functions of SLEU have evolved in line with the university’s evolution in education and research.
At present, SMART continues to implement the original objectives of enhancing students learning and has organized additional programs including language classes, peer tutoring and various workshops.
