Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Diagnosis
Background
Oral and maxillofacial surgery is an integral branch of dentistry that deal with the aspects of diagnosis and treatment, both surgically and adjunctively in terms of diseases, injuries, development defect and pathologies of the hard and soft tissues in the oral and maxillofacial region. The course outline will cover the basis of the above stated subjects and concepts. Specific consideration will also be directed the use, concept and techniques of anaesthesia with particular emphasis on the local anaesthetics. Furthermore, students are expected to carry out general medical practice with regards to dentistry and management of simple to moderate dentoalveolar surgery concerning primarily of simple extractions, management of infection in the oral cavity, surgical removal of impacted teeth, simple preprosthetic surgeries, surgical aid to orthodontics as well as simple biopsies. In addition, students are also exposed to the basis of implantology.
Upon the completion of the course outline, every dental student is expected to demonstrate ample finesse, skills and capability to conduct a good dental practice with regards to oral surgery.
Objectives
- To adequately arm dental students with the necessary knowledge of prompt clinical diagnosis regarding the pathology of the odontogenic as well as non-odontogenic nature well within the limits of the orofacial region. This is also backed by training of students in managing and treatment via practicing most simple to some moderate surgical procedures. In order to achieve that goal, students are thus expected to retain a sound knowledge of the general human’s medical physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry, pathology and clinically applied anatomy which will aid in the diagnosis and treatment of oral and maxillofacial conditions. The ultimate objective of the course devised by the department is to produce an all rounded dental surgeons capable in treating patients in a holistic manner.
- To produce dentists who are highly competent to diagnose and produce an outline of surgical managements necessary in treating conditions of the oral cavity and the surrounding structures.
- To be the centre of excellence for research, academics and delivery of sound service particularly in the field of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Diagnosis.
