THE INAUGURAL SHARING SESSION BETWEEN IIUM, UITM AND USIM IS THE FIRST STEP OF COLLABORATION TO ENHANCE THE LAW FOUNDATION PROGRAMMES

Gambang, 11 November 2021. Three law schools and three law foundation centres come together in the inaugural sharing session of the law foundation programmes in the three universities namely International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM). 


Prof Farid Sufian Shuaib, the Dean of the Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws, thanks the Council of Law Deans chaired by Dato Johan Shamsudin for facilitating the sharing session and the Law Deans from UiTM and USIM, Assoc Prof Dr Hartini Saripan and Assoc Prof Dr Nik Salida Suhaila Nik Saleh for agreeing to come together in this collaboration. The objective of the programme is to enable the sharing of expertise, experience and resources to ensure the best possible foundation programmes to the next generation of students.

The Department of Legal Studies of the Centre of Foundation Studies (CFS), IIUM organises the programme. Participants from the three universities discuss the admission requirements, the curriculum, the study plan and the pathway for students from law foundation programmes. 

The Deans agree that law foundation programmes should firstly provide the students with the basic tools and skills to read law such as language or communication skill, study skill (at tertiary level)  and thinking skill. Secondly, the students should also have awareness of law and society issues for them to have critical thinking in the legal context. Thirdly, students should be mould to have the drive to excel in their study and in their involvement with the community. Students requires these skills and frame of mind to ensure the university could mould balanced graduates.

With regard to accreditation of foundation programmes, the Dean of CFS, IIUM, Tn Hj Murshid Kassim explains to the participants the relevance of the Guidelines of Curriculum for Foundation (GCF).

Pn Farahizah Ab Jalal Bekri, the Head of Department of Legal Studies, CFS, IIUM; Puan Jusniza Abdul Jamal, the Head, Law Foundation Programme, UiTM; and Assoc. Prof Dr Juliana Jumal, the Director, Tamhidi Centre, USIM agree to continue the collaboration by conducting other sharing programmes.
