WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY, IIUM

The IIUM Department of Chemistry was established in 2013 and is a supportive and innovative community whose common goal is to impart knowledge and to mentor the next generation of the best students who will define the scientific frontiers for the ummah.

The Department of Chemistry shares the IIUM’s Strategic Direction of Humanising Education through Maqasid Shariah (MAS) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to transform the IIUM community in becoming a wholesome individual accountable to themselves, to Allah, to the society and to all mankind. Thus, integrating these values with the latest chemical findings; developing materials with new properties, taking part in sustainable energy development, unraveling the complexity of natural systems, detection of diseases to name a few, allows IIUM Chemistry to produce a balanced graduates with paragons of virtue.

Located in the Physical Sciences Building of Kulliyyah of Science, we strive to offer our students an excellent education and encourage them to learn and explore chemistry through collaborative and interdisciplinary research.

The Department offers a 4-year undergraduate course leading to Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Applied Chemistry. Students will take chemistry core courses in the first three years of the programme and choose one concentration package. Students are also required to conduct a research project in the final year of the programme. There is four concentration package offered which are:

  1. Halal and Haram Chemistry
  2. Medicinal Chemistry
  3. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
  4. Cosmetic Chemistry

YEAR 2017

1. PAHANG CHEMISTRY CARNIVAL (PCC 2017)

PCC 2017 was held on 14 – 15th February 2017, at IIUM Kuantan. This two-days carnival is the first fun educational learning event for primary, secondary schools and also university students in Pahang area. This event was officiated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nik Mazlan bin Mamat, Deputy Campus Director, IIUM Kuantan campus. Organized by Department of Chemistry, Kulliyyah of Science, IIUM Kuantan,  with the theme iCHEM 4 YOU, this event was successfully attract almost 1000 participants around Kuantan.

Lots of fun activities have been organized in this event which included Amazing CSI (by JKP),  demonstration by Petrosains Playsmart,  Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Chemistry (by chemistry students) and Make-Your-Own (MYO) Perfume! (by Elliadore) activities. Apart from that, we also have science exhibitions by LYNAS, PROTON, JKM, Jabatan Alam Sekitar, Lembaga Getah, Lembaga Perlesenan Atom, Merck, Permulalab and Interscience. More exciting activities includes Cheminnovator and Jabir Hayyan Quiz Competitions especially for secondary school students. Last but not least, a career talk for university students by Petronas, UiTM and JKP representative.

2. EDUCATIONAL TRIP TO LYNAS

Our department had organized an educational trip to LYNAS at 7th April 2017. This trip open the opportunity in engaging university and industry. Besides, our staff can correlate their research with the current industrial requirement. The aims of this trip are:

i) To introduce our experts to the industry.

ii) To create networking between industry and university.

iii) To collaborate in various field in chemistry research.

3. CHEMISTRY GALA NIGHT

Chemistry Graduation Night is an event organized by our department which aims to celebrate our "first-born baby" (students Batch 131) who will be graduating by the end of this year and strengthening "ukhuwah" (bonding) between students and lecturers. This event was held on 10th May in Zenith Hotel, Kuantan, with the theme "Pastel with Elegence". To all student Batch 131, we wish you all the best in your future undertaking.

4. HARI RAYA CELEBRATION

5. COMMUNITY SERVICE

6. CHEMISTRY SPORTS DAY (MENTOR-MENTEE PROGRAMME)

Chemistry Sports Day 2.0 has been held on 7-13th October, in Sports Complex IIUM Kuantan. This event is also a mentor-mentee gathering programme. In this activity, all students was team up with their respective mentor as a team. Gathering as one big family, playing so many sport games such as netball, futsal, badminton and volleyball, we hope that this activity can develop Tafahum (understanding) and Takaful (helping each other) among all students and lecturers in this department.

7. EDUCATIONAL TRIP TO PROTON
