IIUM Reached the Grand-Final of the World Universities Debating Championship, Cape Town 2019

The World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) is the official world championship for intervarsity debate. A total of 260 teams participated in this year’s tournament which was held at the University of Cape Town, South Africa from 27th December 2018 to 4th January 2019.

At this event IIUM sent 3 teams and 1 adjudicator, a total of 7 students and 1 accompanying officer cum trainer. 

The WUDC this year saw Sydney University (Team D) as the Champion of the Open Category, Hebrew University (Team A) as the Champion of the English as a Second Language (ESL) Category and Keio University (Team A) as the Champion of the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Category. IIUM participated in the Open and ESL Categories.  

IIUM Team A consisted of Shitab Daiyan Akash (KENMS) and Hilmy Yazid (AIKOL) managed to reach the Grand Final of the ESL Category. After a powerful debate on the given motion, IIUM lost to Hebrew University in the Grand Final.

The motion of the World Debate was given15 minutes prior to the round making.

Other IIUM teams also did very well in the tournament. IIUM Team B comprised of Khalis Khalid and Irtza Ali Soomro, both students of AIKOL, reached the Semi-Final of the ESL Category.  IIUM Team C consisted of Shahrulbanun binti Mohd Ariff Sabri (AIKOL) and Nur Hana Zawawi (KENMS) reached the Quarter-Final of the ESL Category. We are definitely proud with the IIUM participants’ achievements.
