IIUM Debate Team Reaches the Quarter-final of the World Debate 2018
The Malaysian debate teams’ participation in the World Universities Debating Championship started back in December 1991 at the World Debate held at Oxford University. Since then Malaysian teams have been a regular fixture at the World Debate. This year the World Universities Debating Championship took place at Mexico from 27th December 2017 to 4th January 2018. The International Islamic University Malaysia, the University of Malaya and the Universiti Teknologi MARA represented Malaysia in the tournament which saw a total of 315 teams from 200 universities from all over the world.
The International Islamic University Malaysia team A reached the quarter-final of the Open Category of the championship where the team bowed out to the University of Oxford and Stanford University. In the process of reaching the quarterfinal and during the preliminary rounds, the IIUM team defeated teams from Harvard University, Trinity College Dublin, Yale University, Inner Temple etc. Br. Ahmad Syarifuddin Bin Ahmad Fakhri (Kulliyyah of Engineering, 3rd Year), a member of the IIUM Team A, received 7th ESL (English as a Second Language) Best Speaker Award in the tournament. IIUM debaters Br. Ahmed Naufal (AIKOL, 4th Year) and Br. Shitab Daiyan Akash (KENMS, 4th Year) also ranked among the top 20 debaters in the same category. In addition, IIUM adjudicator Br. Khalis Khalid (AIKOL, 1st Year) also qualified as an adjudicator for the out-rounds and judged the semi-finals of the ESL Category. It has been 6 years in a row that IIUM teams have qualified for the Open Category out-rounds at the World Debate which no other Asian team has been able to achieve. This year the tournament saw Harvard University Team A, Oxford University Team D and Comillas Pontifical University (Spain) Team A as champions of respectively Open, ESL (English as a Second Language) and EFL (English as Foreign Language) Category. The team dedicated their success to their parents who have been very enthusiastic of their debate ambitions, thanked the IIUM administration for financial and moral support and trainers for their encouragement and tips over the years.
