Concepts are central to the enterprise of humanities. Concepts that we utilize have power to shape the world we see, and without conceptual foundations the edifice of humanities is insecure. Thus, if we fail to develop clear and precise concepts, our knowledge, theoretical insights and empirical discoveries will cease to be effective or constructive. At this moment in time, humanity is overwhelmingly strangled by several challenges which menace both human security, welfare and safety. Misfortunes such as social injustices, illiteracy, starvation, xenophobia, civil wars, dictatorship, refugee crisis, aggression, violence, terrorism, climate change, ecological contaminations, and other negative tendencies have globally escalated.

Many parties have attempted to address these calamities at different levels, however, they have not yet found durable solutions to accomplish peace, tolerance and harmony within societies. Therefore, to face these challenges, what can the educated people offer to achieve harmony and happiness? How can we conceptualize suitable approaches to solve global problems? How can we transfer the theoretical inquiries into an effective reality? Is renovation possible without further spiritual and material damage? To what extent are these solutions practical and what should be done to sustain an everlasting positive change? These questions must be instantly pondered upon so as to uplift the humankind situation and attain maintainable development and contentment.

Both Western and Muslim scholarships comprise imperative means in offering responses to these questions. Remedies to the existing individual, societal and international problems are associated with the way people tackle the situations. Some Muslim scholars advocated original ways of pondering upon and responding to the global challenges through constructive thinking. Knowledge, concepts and theories are key terms in approaching life and they need to be deliberated. Thorough debates are urgently needed to scrutinize knowledge production, concepts and theories, their means and objectives so as to implement them in every single facet of human life and provide sustainable responses to the challenges facing humanity.

On 24-25 July 2019, the International Postgraduate Seminar on Producing Knowledge, Concept Formation and Theory Building will be held at the International Islamic University Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The primary aim of this international seminar is to train Postgraduate Students how to build theories, find the correct methodology in the way of producing knowledge. The main organizers of the seminar are the Kulliyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences (KIRKHS), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), and the Istanbul Foundation for Science and Culture (IFSC).

Paper presenters are welcome to share their thoughts and insights within the scope of the main theme of the seminar, some other visions are also invited:

  • Western and Muslim contributions to knowledge production and concept formation
  • Theoretical and Conceptual Perspectives on constructive actions
  • Muslim perspective on knowledge inquiry
  • A framework of Risale-i Nur in addressing social ills and educational backwardness in the Muslim world
  • Contemporary Islamic Thought and Muslims’ approaches to knowledge and theories
  • Theological and philosophical approaches to the concepts of  Muslim unity, solidarity, human fraternity, critical thinking, social justice, spirituality, ethics, morality, tolerance of diversity, peaceful co-existence, implementation of legal rights, social and community service, and moral values education.
  • Sociological, economic, political, ethical, historical, pedagogical, psychological, managerial and educational perspectives of knowledge production, concept  formation and theory building
  • Practical solutions provided by particular thinkers and scholars to global problems such as racism, terror, violence, negative nationalism, Islamophobia, injustice,  xenophobia, environmental pollution and climate change, income inequality, secularization, human rights violations, individualism, egocentrism, nihilism, hedonism, and sadism.

Reminder:

Kindly take note that the committee will select only twenty best papers that meet the seminar’s expectations considering consistency, methodology, language and ideas.  The presentations at the seminar will be attended and evaluated by several well-known Professors from Turkey, Singapore and Malaysia. The selected papers will be published with International Journals.

Prof. Dr. Alparslan Acikgenc

Alparslan Acingenc is Professor Emeritus at Uskudar University. In 1991-1993, Acikgenc was Visiting Professor at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He taught at the Middle East Technical University, Department of Philosophy until 1994. He joined and taught at ISTAC as Professor of Philosophy from 1995 until 1999. In 1998 he was Visiting Professor in Department of Philosophy at the University of Jordan, Amman. Then he taught at various universities in Istanbul until his retirement at Yıldız Technical University in 2015. Presently he teaches as Emeritus at Uskudar University. He wrote a number of books and articles which are directly related to Islam and science, or religion and science perspectives. His main area of research is history of philosophy, philosophy science and epistemology.


Prof. Dr. Syed Farid Alatas

Syed Farid Alatas is Professor of Sociology at the National University of Singapore. He lectured at the University of Malaya in the Department of Southeast Asian Studies prior to joining NUS. His areas of interest are historical sociology, the sociology of social science, the sociology of religion and inter-religious dialogue. Among his recent books are Alternative Discourse in Asian Social Science: Responses to Eurocentrism (Sage, 2006), Ibn Khaldun (Oxford University Press, 2012), and Applying Ibn Khaldun: The Recovery of a Lost Tradition in Sociology (Routledge, 2014). He is currently researching on Salafism in the Malay world.


Dr. Osman Erdem Yapar

Dr. Osman Erdem Yapar is an experienced educationalist with academic background in English language teaching and distance education and worked in the UK, Turkey and Oman teaching English to adult learners at various higher education institutions. He is a qualified trainer for EU projects on intercultural competence, youth work and refugee inclusion. He has written and taken part in several projects for social integration and challenge of Islamophobia. Dr. Yapar is a board member at the Center for Cross-cultural Communication which specializes on introducing Islam and Turkish culture to foreign visitors in historical mosques in Istanbul. He has recently co-authored a book entitled “Faith Tourism in Istanbul.” He is also a project coordinator at Istanbul Foundation for Science and Culture where he organized numerous seminars and workshops and delivered speeches locally and internationally. He is currently working on an international project on “Moral Values Education” which includes partners from Malaysia, Turkey, Ukraine and the UK.
